Cards Split Sunday Doubleheader, Take Series from Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – After WJU fell 2-0 in game one, Cody Hudson guided the Cardinals to a 3-1 game two victory. The Shadyside, Ohio native tossed 7.1 scoreless innings for the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team, and the Cardinals defeated the Notre Dame College Falcons, 3-1, in game two on Sunday.

After sweeping the Falcons on Saturday, WJU (13-23/12-12 MEC) managed to win the series, 3-1, over Notre Dame (21-21/14-10 MEC).

Dillon Sunnafrank took the mound for the Cardinals in game one. Sunnafrank, who holds a MEC-best season ERA of 1.89, allowed just one earned run. WJU was unable to plate a run, and the Cardinals fell, 2-0.

The Cardinals recorded four hits in game one. Christopher Minder doubled to deep left field, while Brock McGivern, Shaun Gaydos, and Sunnafrank each tallied singles.

Logan Hudson began game two for WJU before leaving in the second inning due to an injury. His brother, Cody, would throw the final 7.1 innings for the Cardinals, allowing zero runs to score. Cody struck out one hitter on his way to picking up the series clinching victory.

Notre Dame led, 1-0, after a first inning homerun. Hudson denied the Falcons anymore runs, and the Cardinals bats came alive at the right time.

McGivern led the bottom half of the sixth inning off with a single to centerfield. Jagger Bruck bunted McGivern to second and Tony Connacher singled to leftfield. Connacher would steal second, before Sunnafrank flew out to deep centerfield, scoring McGivern, the game-tying run.

Christopher Brake recorded a leadoff single in the eighth inning. McGivern would advance Brake to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bruck singled to left, and WJU had runners on the corners. Connacher laid down a safety squeeze, reaching first base safely. Sunnafrank drove in his second run of the game on a fielder's choice, as Brake crossed home. Bruck would score on a throwing error, and the Cardinals led, 3-1.

Hudson would retire the Falcons in the top of the ninth, and the Cardinals went on to win, 3-1.

Sunnafrank finished game two with a double and two RBI's. Connacher went 2-3 at the plate and stole one base, while McGivern, Brake, and Bruck each scored once and recorded one base hit.

The Cardinals travel to Urbana University for a weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 30.
