Cardinals Set Win Standard on ‘Senior Day’ Sweep

WHEELING, W.Va. – A new Cardinals win standard has been set. Wheeling Jesuit produced a 'Senior Day' sweep of Urbana University, 4-1 and 8-2, on its way to a new program win record.

Kelsi Thompson blasted a two-run home run and drove in three scores for the WJU opening victory. Molly Welsh knocked in four runs on three second-game hits as the Cardinals completed the two wins over the Blue Knights (3-34/2-23 Mountain East Conference North)

Victoria Scott set to catch Molly Welsh's center-field throw and tag out the Urbana runner in game two.

The Cardinals won game numbers 31 and 32 and topped the 30-win plateau for the first time since the softball program was restarted 14 years ago. WJU improved to 32-18 overall and 20-10 in the MEC North.

"The team did a good job today. I'm glad they were able to get the two wins for our seniors," said WJU coach Kelli Williams.

WJU celebrated the team's four seniors – Ali Smith, Marissa Cangelosi, Brittany Prager and Darci Lake – before the doubleheader's first pitch. Smith lined an RBI double and Cangelosi slapped a pair of hits and came around to score both times.

In her first action in a week, Welsh went 4 for 5 with two doubles and two singles, while she drove in four runs and scored twice.

Morgan Stohlman added three hits, while Rachel Conrad doubled and singled.

In the circle, Mallory Chapman (16-9) posted her fourth shutout of the year, a six-hitter, for the opening victory, where she struck out six.

Kori Locke picked up game two's win in relief. She logged 4.1 innings where she allowed two hits and fanned four.

WJU completes its regular season schedule Sunday. The Cardinals host the Falcons of Notre Dame College starting at 1 p.m.
