Crabtree Forces Turnover and Brochu’s Goal Gives WJU OT Upset of Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – It took a pair of Cardinals seniors on both ends of the overtime field for the Saturday afternoon upset. Zach Crabtree forced a turnover, before Bryce Brochu fired home the game-winning goal on Wheeling Jesuit's lone overtime shot with 1:35 left for the 16-15 upset victory over Seton Hill.

After battling back from a four-goal halftime deficit, the Cardinals (7-4/5-2 ECAC) scored four-straight fourth-period goals to take a 15-12 lead with 1:49 remaining. The Griffins (9-4/4-3 ECAC) answered with a trio of their own goals in only 1:13 and sent the match to overtime.

Following two Seton Hill shots in the first 1:21 of the extra period, Crabtree hammered a turnover and the WJU defense secured a clear. After a visitors' timeout, Brochu found the net for the fourth time on the day on a pass from McLean Fitzmartin and the Cardinals winning celebration was on.

"It's hard to put into words what this win means to this team," explained an exuberant WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "We've had our fair share of heart breaks this season, and today, we put all that behind us. This team works so hard day in and day out. I couldn't be more thankful and honored to be a part of this program."

DelPrince continued, "This team will never forget that last minute of overtime. Zach Crabtree and Luke Gilman had two incredible plays on the defensive end, which allowed us to set up for the last possession. With the game on the line, Bryce (Brochu) was able to seal the deal for us today with a ridiculous shot from the top."

With the victory, WJU (7-4) clinches a winning regular season with one match left.

Brochu finished the day with four goals and two assists. Sophomore Matt Lee had his best game of the season of five goals and an assist.

Dereck Downs contributed three goals and one assist, while Fitzmartin added two goals and the game-winning assist.

Michael Schonhiutt assisted on three goals and scored one of his own. Evan Hodel won 13 of 29 face-offs and posted four ground balls.

In the goal, Jake Lilly registered 10 saves against a 51-shot Seton Hill attack.

"Jake Lilly had another outstanding game for us in the cage. He has proven time and time again that he is one of the best goalies in the country," noted DelPrince.

The Griffins scored three of the match's first four goals in the opening 5:36 and they finished off the first period with a 6-3 advantage.

Downs accounted for both WJU second-period scores, but Seton Hill won the period and held a 9-5 intermission lead.

The Cardinals played their biggest 15-minute period in the third. The visitors netted the first three over the opening 3:22 and made it a 6-1 run in just under five minutes. Brochu's third goal off a Downs pass with 2:07 left tied the match, 11-11, after three periods.

WJU continued its run into the fourth frame with four-straight scores after a Seton Hill tally for a 15-12 lead.

WJU finishes its regular season at Lake Erie College next Sunday, May 1, in a noon match.
