No. 10 Lake Erie Ends WJU Men’s Lacrosse Playoff Push

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – No. 10 Lake Erie College registered a key six-straight goal run and ended Wheeling Jesuit late-season Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference playoff push, 22-13, on Sunday afternoon.

The Storm (9-5/6-2 ECAC) turned a 10-8 lead into a match-deciding 16-8 advantage when they finished the first half with a pair of goals and netted the opening four second-half scores. The Cardinals' (7-5/5-3 ECAC) Dereck Downs pulled his team within 16-11 at 2:23 left in the third period, but the visitors could get no closer.

With the loss, WJU finished just outside the ECAC playoff push in the win-and-get in match. The Cardinals had won their last five matches and seven of eight going into the match.

"On the half of the entire team, I want to thank the seniors for the countless hours of hard work they've put into this program over the last four years. We didn't get the win like we wanted to today, but those seven guys have done so much to help put this team in a position to be successful moving forward," said WJU coach Landon DelPrince. "Since the beginning of the year, everyone had counted us out. I think when you look at the season as a whole, we have exceeded expectations."

In his final match, Bryce Brochu led WJU with four goals and three assists. The senior finished with a team-best 30 assists and 58 points, while second with 28 goals.

Downs and Matt Lee both struck for three goals and an assist. Sam Horning had a pair of goals and one assist. Michael Schonhiutt netted the other WJU goal and McLean Fitzmartin assisted on one score.

WJU goalie Jake Lilly saved 12 shots of the 34 Lake Erie shots on goal.

After an opening Storm goal, Brochu tied the match, 1-1, at 10:58 in the first quarter. The home team netted the next two goals, before WJU went on a 4-2 spurt over the next 5:49. Schonhiutt tied the match, 5-5, for what would be the final time on a Brochu pass at 2:55 remaining in the opening period.

Lake Erie scored the final two goals of the first half and the first one of the second stanza for an 8-5 lead.

Brochu fired the ball into the net to cut the difference to two, 10-8, with 5:46 in the first half. Lake Erie answered with the six goals in a row over the rest of the second quarter and opening second-half minutes.

"I'm excited about the future of this program. I truly believe that every single underclassman on this team will work tirelessly to continue on the legacy our seniors leave behind today. That is what makes this WJU men's lacrosse brotherhood so special," finished DelPrince.
