WHEELING, W.Va. – After winning game one of Saturday's doubleheader over the Notre Dame College Falcons, Logan Schickler crushed a 10th inning double to the right centerfield gap, leading the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Falcons.
WJU improves to 11-11 in the Mountain East Conference. The Cardinals host Notre Dame for two more games tomorrow, Sunday April 24, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
Benjamin Standiford guided WJU with four innings of three hit baseball during game one. Standiford picked up his third win of the season. Justin Fritts earned his second save of the season.
Joe San Felippo tossed five innings for WJU in game two. Logan Menear and Kyle Rees combined for seven outs, while Fritts recorded the final 2.2 innings of work, earning the game two victory.
Game 1:
Standiford allowed a first inning run for the Faclons, but that was all the Cambridge, Ohio native would concede.
Brock McGivern led the Cardinals off with a first inning walk. McGivern later reached third by way of a Jagger Bruck double. McGivern managed to steal home, tying the contest at one apiece.
Shaun Gaydos led the second inning off with a base hit, followed by a McGivern single. Bruck would reach safely before Tony Connacher reached first on a Falcon error, scoring Gaydos. Dillon Sunnafrank singled in his second at bat, scoring McGivern. John Staab drove home Bruck with a single, and the Cardinals led 4-1 after two innings of play.
Notre Dame would score once in the sixth inning, but Fritts managed to shut the door, ensuring the Cardinals game one victory.
Game 2:
Notre Dame claimed a 3-0 lead after three innings of play. WJU responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Connacher singled and stole second, and was advanced to third on a Sunnafrank groundout. San Felippo was hit by a pitch and stole second. Schickler drew a walk, loading the bases with one out.
Gaydos drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Connacher. Chris Brake later scored San Felippo on a groundout to third.
The Falcons stretched their lead back to three runs, 5-2, in the sixth inning. The Cardinals would add a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh inning, pulling ahead by one run.
Gaydos drove in Schickler to pull WJU within two runs, 5-3, in the sixth inning.
Dillon Sunnafrank began the bottom of the seventh with a walk, and San Felippo followed with exactly what the Cardinals needed. San Felippo blasted a no doubt homerun, his first of the season, to deep left field, tying the game at five each.
Gaydos drew another walk, and was pinch ran for by Chris Minder. Minder advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored two pitches later.
Notre Dame would tie WJU, 6-6, in the eighth inning, causing the game to go to extra innings. The Falcons regained the lead in the 10th inning, 7-6.
Connacher singled to left field before San Felippo reached first safely with two outs. Schickler crushed a double to deep right center field, scoring both Cardinals, and securing the sweep of the Falcons, 4-2 and 8-7.
Daily Stats:
Connacher finished the day with three hits and two runs scored. Schickler added two hits, including the game winning double, while collecting a pair of RBI's and one run scored. McGivern scored two runs and tallied two singles.
Sunnafrank finished with one hit, a run, and one RBI. Bruck singled and scored once. Staab went 1-3 with a single and a RBI. San Felippo scored three runs and drove in two, including his homerun. Gaydos supplied the Cardinals with two hits, two RBI's, and one run. Brake finished with two RBI's.
On the mound, Standiford charted four innings and struck out one hitter. He allowed just three hits. Cody Hudson allowed one run in 1.2 innings of work.
San Felippo threw five innings, striking out five hitters and allowing just one earned run. Fritts threw a total of four innings, recording both a save and a win. Menear tossed 1.1 innings, while Rees completed one inning.
