Eight-Straight Goals Helps Cardinals Overtake Scots, Even Season Record

VIENNA, W.Va. – Over a 13-minute period of the first half, Matt Lee and the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team netted eight-straight goals and broke open Saturday's match on the way to a 21-13 victory at Ohio Valley.

Leading 4-2, the Cardinals went on their scoring binge led by Lee, who scored the first at 2:57 left in the first period and added three more of the seven goals over the first 10:14 of period number two. Lee's fifth goal gave WJU its largest lead, 17-5, at 6:02 in the third period, but Ohio Valley won the fourth period.

With the win, Wheeling Jesuit evened its record, 4-4, for the first time since its opening match and 3-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Ohio Valley went to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the ECAC.

"It was certainly an exciting day. Given how well we played in the first two quarters of the game, we were able to cycle a lot of young guys in during the second half," said WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "It was awesome to see these guys play for one another for a full 60 mintues. This is truly a special group of young men."

Lee totaled his season-high with five goals and one assist to lead the Cardinals attack.

Dereck Downs found the net three times and assisted on two more. Bryce Brochu assisted on three scores and totaled two goals, while Mike Stillings had two goals.

Six Cardinals – Luke Gilman, McLean Fitzmartin, Trenton Kindall, Sam Horning, Michael Schonhiutt and Michael Jablonski – all had a goal and one assist.

Josh Pawloski, Philip Burns and David Corral each scored one time.

"I want to give a big acknowledgement to Josh Pawloski, Phillip Burns and David Corral, who score their first collegiate goals today. Those two work incredibly hard each and every day, and I couldn't be more happy for them," added DelPrince.

Kellen McMahon registered 10 saves in the WJU goal, while Jake Lilly and Collin Smith added five and three saves.

Downs and Stillings started the Cardinals' scoring against the Scots. The WJU duo scored 15 seconds apart at 11:24 and 11:09 of the first period for a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals return home for a 7 p.m. Wednesday night match, April 6, against Davis & Elkins.
