Yellow Jackets Edge Cardinals in Both Ends of Twinbill

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State edged Wheeling Jesuit on both ends of the baseball diamond Saturday doubleheader, 3-2 in eight innings and 6-4.

After the Cardinals (6-16/5-5 Mountain East Conference North) tied the game in the top of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets (12-8/7-3 MEC South) grabbed the game-winning run on a home eighth pass ball in the opener. WJU pulled to within 6-4 with four late runs, but it could not rally the rest of the way in the late contest.

Chris Brake lined three hits and scored two runs in the Cardinals afternoon.

Logan Schickler doubled and singled, while both Anthony Connacher and Dillon Sunnafrank singled twice.

WJU completes its weekend with a 1 p.m. home Sunday doubleheader against the University of Charleston.

Game 1

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Brake led off for WJU with a single. Schickler followed with a double. The two Cardinals runners scored on a passed ball and a Yellow Jacket error to tie the game, 2-2.

West Virginia State lined back-to-back singles and drew a walk to load the bases of the first three bottom of the eighth batters. After WJU reliever Justin Fritts picked off two runners, WV State plated the winner on a passed ball.

Game 2

West Virginia State jumped out to a quick game two lead. The home club scored three times in the first and two more times in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Trailing 6-0 in the top of the fifth, Brock McGivern garnered a bases-loaded walk for the first Cardinals run.

WJU added three more scores in the sixth. Brake drove in the first run with a single to center field, before Cody Hudson reached on a West Virgina State throwing error, which brought in the other two and made it 6-4.
