Cardinals Tie Season Win Mark, Split Against ‘Toppers

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second time since the program's 2002 restart, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team has 30 wins in a season. After being edged in Tuesday's opener, 5-4, the Cardinals took advantage of the Hilltoppers of West Liberty late-game miscues for a 7-3 game two victory.
 
Leading 4-1, WJU let the first game slip away as West Liberty tied the game in the sixth and a seventh-inning Julie Tenney RBI double plated the game-winner. The Cardinals scored three third-inning runs and added four more unearned fourth-frame scores, including a two-run Dana Achille single in game two.
 
The Cardinals secured their 30th victory with the second game victory. WJU improved to 30-18 overall and tied the 2004 squad, which finished 30-23. The 30 wins also are the most season wins since the Wheeling Jesuit softball program was restarted for the 2002 campaign and clinched the team's first winning season since 2008 where the Cardinals completed a 27-18-1 year.
 
"These girls have worked hard this season and I am glad we could hit the 30-win milestone," said WJU head coach Kelli Williams.
 
Marissa Cangelosi, Cassie Holstein and Victoria Scott combined for 11 of the Cardinals' 18 hits in the twinbill. Cangelosi posted a 5 for 6 day with three runs.
 
Holstein contributed three singles and a run, while Scott slashed three hits, scored twice and drove in a pair.
 
Ali Smith and Morgan Stohlman belted doubles. Achille had a single and three RBI.
 
The Cardinals (18-10 Mountain East Conference North) complete their home schedule this weekend with two doubleheaders. WJU hosts Urbana University Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
 
"I know we can do so much more and I am looking forward to this weekend and the MEC Tournament," added Williams.
 
West Liberty received a Kelsi Johnson three-run home run in game two.
 
Game 1
 
WJU put the day's first runs on the scoreboard in its first at bat. With two outs, Smith drove in Kelsi Thompson, who walked, for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Cardinals added a pair in the third off a Stohlman sac fly and a Mallory Chapman bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0.
 
Trailing 4-1, West Liberty tied the game with three sixth-inning runs, 4-4. Tenney put the visitors ahead in the top of the seventh and the Hilltoppers held the home team scoreless in the bottom of the inning for the 5-4 win.

Game 2
 
In a scoreless game, Scott knocked home Cangelosi, who led off with a single. Achille and Rachel Conrad drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks for a 3-0 WJU lead after three frames.
 
WJU push across four more tallies in the fourth off a Scott RBI sacrifice and Achille's two-run single down the left field line for a 7-0 margin.
 
West Liberty's Johnson connected for a three-run seventh inning home run, but it wasn't enough for the 7-3 final.
