WJU Baseball Loses Close One, Fall in Game Two at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team took the lead, but could not hold onto it and fell in a close opener at Shepherd, 4-2, before it fell 17-5 late Sunday.

An Anthony Connacher run-scoring single and a Brock McGivern sac bunt tied the game for the Cardinals (10-22/9-11 Mountain East Conference North), 2-1 lead, before Rams' single runs in each of the next three at bats for the difference. MEC North-leading Shepherd (23-9/16-4 MEC North) plated seven runs in the first two game-two innings and never looked back.

Connacher finished the day with a double and two singles of WJU's 14 hits.

Jagger Bruck and Adam Dennison both lined a pair of hits. Dillon Sunnafrank, Carter Sancomb and Chris Minder all doubled.

WJU has two days off before hosting West Liberty in a single game Wednesday night, April 20, starting at 6 p.m.

Game 1:
After the Rams struck first in the opening inning, WJU responded with a pair of runs in the third inning, taking a 2-1 advantage. Bruck led the inning off with a base hit to right field. Shaun Gaydos singled to the left side, advancing Bruck to second. Adam Dennison bunted his two teammates over, and WJU would have runners on second and third with just one out.

Connacher knotted the contest at one apiece with a single to centerfield, scoring Bruck. McGivern drove in Gaydos on a fielder's choice, as WJU took a 2-1 lead.

Shepherd would tie the contest at two apiece in their half of the third inning before adding a run in the fourth and fifth innings, securing a 4-2 victory.

Joe San Felippo tossed six innings for WJU. He allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out nine Rams.

Game 2:
Sunnafrank doubled home McGivern in the top of the first for what would be WJU's lone lead of the contest, 1-0.

Shepherd exerted themselves early with seven runs in the opening two innings and posted multiple runs in four of the first six frames.

Minder added a two-run double in the eighth as the Cardinals other big hit of the game
