Cardinals Bats Come Alive, Sweep Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – After a difficult weekend heading Sunday, the Wheeling Jesuit bats came alive and helped get the team a pair of softball victories at Fairmont State, 8-4 and 4-3.

The Cardinals plated a five-run fourth, including a three-run Marissa Cangelosi double as the key opening win hit over the Falcons. Kelsi Thompson added a RBI top-of-the seventh single for an insurance run as WJU held off Fairmont State (17-21/12-12 Mountain East Conference North), which received a two-out two-run home run in the home half of the inning for the one-run late victory.

The two Cardinals win ended a six-game losing streak and tough 10-game from five doubleheaders over six days. The WJU victories also gave it the second-most season wins of 29 – 29-17 overall and 17-9 MEC North – since the program was restarted for the 2002 season.

Leadoff hitter Cassie Holstein did her job all day and posted a 6 for 7 day with a pair of runs as part of the 29 WJU hit attack.

Victoria Scott doubled, singled three times and drove in four runs. Cangelosi added a double, three singles, three runs and three RBI of her own.

Morgan Stohlman lined four hits and two RBI, while Ali Smith doubled, singled two times and drove in one. Jackie Cramer and Thompson both chipped in three hits.

The Cardinals have Monday off before they host the rival Hilltoppers of West Liberty in the second twinbill Tuesday afternoon, April 19, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1

Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth, Cangelosi cleared the bases with a double to left center and tied the game at 3. Following a Holstein single, Scott belted her own two-bagger to right cent and completed the five-run WJU at bat for a 5-3 lead.

Stohlman drove in a run in the sixth and Scott added a two-run single in the seventh for the final visitors' runs.

Game 2

Down 1-0, Cramer singled to right field to tie the game in the second.

Smith doubled and Stohlman reached on a Fairmont State error for the second run to make it 3-1 WJU after 5.5 frames.

Thompson's RBI seventh-inning hit proved important as the Falcons hit a two-run home run, but they fell a run short of tying the game, 4-3.
