Cardinals Mid-First Half Outburst Overtakes Battlers

WHEELING, W.Va. – On a sunny 'Senior Day', Bryce Brochu and the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team used a mid-first half scoring outburst and overtook Alderson Broaddus, 18-9.

Trailing 4-3 in the first period, Brochu assisted on one of five Dereck Downs goals and fired home his own 53 seconds later as part of three-straight and a 9-2 Cardinals (6-4) run. WJU extended a six-goal halftime lead with the opening two second-half scores and ran past Alderson Broaddus (4-8).

"It was certainly a great day for our program. I'm incredibly happy with the energy we brought today as we wanted to make it a special day for our seniors, and I think we achieved that goal," said Landon DelPrince, WJU head coach. "Congratulations to the seniors and the success they've had over the past four year. It's been a pleasure playing with and coaching these guys, and I'm excited about the opportunity we have to extend their final season here at Wheeling Jesuit."

Brochu had his hand on eight of the team's 18 goals. The senior midfielder totaled four goals and four assists in his final home match.

He was joined by six other WJU seniors – Luke Gilman, Evan Hodel, Zach Crabtree, Troy Mendenhall, Nick Messner and Matt DeVries.

Gilman had a solid contest with two goals, an assists and three ground balls. Face-off specialist Hodel won 21 of 29 face-offs with 17 ground balls.

Downs fired in five goals and Sam Horning produced two goals and two assists. Matt Lee finished with two goals and four ground balls. McLean Fitzmartin added a goal and two assists.

Kenny Keyes scored once, while he caused two turnovers and had two ground balls. Michael Schonhiutt rounded out the home goal scoring.

Goalie Jake Lilly stopped 13 Battlers scoring attempts.

Leading 12-6 at half, Horning netted the first third-period score at 7:18. In one of the most exciting turn of events in the match, Keyes caused a turnover on the defensive end, scooped the ball up and raced the full length to fire home the game and a 14-6 margin.

WJU finishes on the road for its final two matches. The Cardinals play at the Griffins of Seton Hill next Saturday, April 23, in a 1 p.m. match.

"It's time to switch gears to Seton Hill now. With the hopes of making it to the conference playoffs, we need to have a good showing in that game," added DelPrince.
