No. 16 Bobcats Prevail Over Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The No. 16-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan softball team took advantage of Wheeling Jesuit miscues and added second-game power for 6-0 and 7-0 victories Wednesday.

The Bobcats (37-5/19-3 Mountain East Conference) scored five of its first-game six runs via the unearned variety against the Cardinals (27-13/15-5 MEC). West Virginia Wesleyan hit back-to-back leadoff top of the third-inning home runs and did not allow a WJU past second base in the late contest.

WJU managed only seven hits in the two contests.

Molly Welsh doubled and singled, while Dana Achille and Cassie Holstein both singled two times. Morgan Stohlman added a game-one single.

The Cardinals head on the road for six games in three days over the weekend. WJU begins with back-to-back doubleheaders at Shepherd starting at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15.

Game 1

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, the Cardinals had their best scoring chance. With two outs and a runner on, Welsh lined a hit to second base, but WJU failed to score on the next hitter.

The Bobcats pushed home three more unearned runs in the seventh.

Game 2

WJU was unable to take advantage of some early hits. In both the first and second innings, the Cards did not score either Holstein in the first or Achille in the second.

Welsh slashed a two-out double in the fifth, but made it no closer to home.
