Cardinals Freshman Welsh and Locke Help Sweep Yellow Jackets

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Cardinals softball future was on full display Tuesday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit freshmen Molly Welsh lined five hits and Kori Locke fired her first shutout and they helped sweep West Virginia State, 8-3 and 4-0.

The Cardinals (27-11/15-3 Mountain East Conference North) produced an 18-hit attack in the two contests. Welsh doubled twice and tripled with a pair of runs and two RBI in the opener. Locke registered her first career shutout with a five-hitter and fanned nine in the last contest over the Yellow Jackets (24-20/9-13 MEC South).

"Our bats were great today. It's nice to see us hit the way we did," said WJU head coach Kelli Williams. "People stepped up and it was great to see!"

The two WJU wins extended the program run to 17-1 over the last 18 games.

For the day, Welsh finished 5 for 6 after two singles in game two. Cassie Holstein added a double and three singles to go with three RBI.

Ali Smith's two singles drove in three Cardinals runs, while Rachel Conrad scored once and knocked in a run with her two late contest hits. Kelsi Thompson also singled in each game.
