BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Due to inclement weather over the weekend, the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team traveled to Fairmont State University for a makeup doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons claimed game one, 4-0, before Logan Hudson tossed a complete game in the Cardinals 8-2 victory.
Fairmont scored a run in the first and fourth innings of game one before adding two more in the fifth. The Cardinals took an early lead in the second game, scoring two runs in the second inning and four in the third. WJU added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and went on to win the contest, 8-2.
Game 1:
Brock McGivern, Dillon Sunnafrank, Shaun Gaydos, and Jagger Bruck all finished with a base hit, but the Cardinals were unable to score. Joe San Felippo charted five innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out three hitters. Logan Menear threw one inning for WJU, walking one and striking out two hitters.
Game 2:
Sunnafrank led off the second inning with a single to short, before Tony Connacher singled to centerfield. Both Cardinals would advance one base on a wild pitch before Gaydos grounded out, driving home Sunnafrank and advancing Connacher to third. Connacher would later score on a fielding error.
McGivern jumpstarted the four-run third inning for WJU with a leadoff single. Logan Schickler reached base safely before San Felippo brought in McGivern by way of a sacrifice fly. Sunnafrank later doubled to deep left field to score Schickler. Connacher drew a walk, and both Sunnafrank and Connacher crossed home later in the inning, giving WJU a 6-0 lead.
San Felippo led off the seventh inning with a double down the left field line, while Sunnafrank and Connacher drew walks. John Staab singled to right, scoring San Felippo and Sunnafrank.
Hudson earned his third victory of the season, as he finished the day with two strikeouts, while allowing only one earned run. Sunnafrank finished game two with two hits, a RBI, and three runs scored. Gaydos tallied one base hit and collected two RBI's, while San Felippo scored once and added one RBI to his season total. Connacher added two runs and a single, and Staab finished with one RBI. McGivern and Schickler also scored once in game two.
