Cardinals Give DelPrince First Victory, Defeat Crusaders

WHEELING, W.Va. – The third time was the charm. Wheeling Jesuit first-year head coach Landon DelPrince posted his first career coaching win as his Cardinals men's lacrosse team defeated the Crusaders of North Greenville, 11-8, on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Dereck Downs netted four WJU (1-3) second-half goals, including a pair in the final 10:20, and led the home attack over the Crusaders (3-4).

"From a mental standpoint, today was an important one. We've been knocking on the door the past few games, and today we were able to kick that door in," said DelPrince. "I asked a lot of my guys today, and they brought the fight. Three games in five days is a tough stretch for anyone. I love the enthusiasm I received from everyone tonight as we didn't quit all game. They definitely deserve all the credit for the win. We're certainly happy to get our first win of the season."

The Cardinals' Sam Horning added three goals and Matt Lee fired home two scores. Both Bryce Brochu and McLean Fitzmartin assisted on two goals and scored one team apiece.

North Greenville's Bryson Palmer netted three goals.

Trailing 3-2 early in the second quarter, Horning (3:54) and Lee (2:37) lined goals and put WJU ahead 4-3 at intermission.

Fitzmartin, Downs and Horning each scored in the first 11 minutes of the third period and extended the margin to four goals, 7-3.

Unlike its last two overtime match losses, WJU held strong and never let North Greenville get closer than 8-6, before it found the net for three of the final five goals.

WJU stays at home for a Saturday, March 12, match against the University of Indianapolis. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.

"Now it's time for us to go on a run and show people what we can really do. We're excited for Indianapolis this weekend, and I hope to see the students pack the house for us come game time," finished DelPrince.
