WJU Lead Slips Away in Final Quarter Against Fla. Tech

BALTIMORE – For the second time in three days, Wheeling Jesuit saw a five-goal four-quarter lead slip away and came up short in overtime, 12-11, against Florida Tech held at Johns Hopkins.

Matt Lee fired what would be the Cardinals (0-3) final goal and extend their largest lead, 11-6, with 9:42 left in the match. The Panthers (4-1) rallied with five unanswered scores in the final 7:45 to tie the match, before Austen Zugelter netted the game-winner with 2:08 left in overtime.

"Today was certainly another heartbreaking loss. We thought we had them put away in the fourth quarter, but we quickly realized that no lead is safe," said WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "This team is still without a doubt is all in. Our program is way too tough and determined to call it quits this early in teh season. We're only just a few plays away from being great."

Florida Tech turned the tide by outshooting WJU, 12-4, in the final quarter, while it forced five final-period turnovers.

Dereck Downs paced the Cardinals' offense with four goals and two assists. Senior Bryce Brochu had his hand on eight of the WJU scores – two goals and six assists – along with two ground balls.

Sam Horning added a pair of goal and five ground balls. Joe Wright and Mike Stillings had one goal apiece.

Jake Lilly posted 11 saves in the WJU goal.

Brochu helped WJU take an early 5-2 lead with a goal and two assists at 14:21 left in the first half. Stillings made it 7-3 with 2:07 before the half.

"I believe in my guys, and we're about to go off on Wednesday and begin our streak. You can count on that," finished the WJU coach.

WJU returns to Bishop Schmitt Field for a 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, game against North Greenville.
