Cardinals Battle No. 10 Lakers, Fall in Overtime

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals lacrosse team came out firing on Saturday's ECAC showdown. WJU took a 5-3 halftime lead against No. 10 Mercyhurst University, but fell to the Lakers in the first overtime period, 11-10.

"Again, I couldn't be more proud of the way our guys fought today. Not once did we put our heads down and give in to the challenges we faced throughout the game. I'm incredibly grateful to be a part of a team that is so willing to sacrifice for one another," said WJU coach Landon DelPrince. "Going into this week, the goal we set for ourselves was to play smarter and a more well-rounded game. The execution today was phenomenal and it was just a few plays that ultimately made the difference."

Mercyhurst struck first, with a score in the eighth minute of play, and took a 1-0 advantage. WJU sophomore Matt Lee answered thirty seconds later to tie the contest at one apiece.

The two teams exchanged goals over the next 90 seconds, including a Derek Downs score to tie the game at two. Mercyhurst regained the upper hand, 3-2, before the WJU offense began a run.

The Cardinals scored five of the next six goals, including three in a row to take a 5-3 lead. Lee scored the first two WJU goals of the run, while Michael Schonhiutt gave WJU its 5-3 lead.
Mercyhurst had a brief answer, and the Cardinals margin was shrunk to one goal.

McLean Fitzmartin got in on the scoring with an unassisted goal at 13:51 in the third period. Sam Horning found the net three minutes later, and the Cardinals led 7-4.

The Lakers were responsible for the next four scores, and they took an 8-7 advantage. Horning stopped the bleeding with his second score of the game and the first of the fourth period, and the contest became tied for the fifth time.

Mike Stillings fired a shot with 9:48 remaining and the scoreboard read nine apiece. Mercyhurst scored what appeared to be the game-winning goal with 1:33 on the game clock, but WJU was not finished.

Horning scored on the Cardinals last offensive possession to send the game into a fifth and overtime period.

The Cardinals maintained control for nearly the entire fourth period, before the Lakers scored the deciding goal with 42 seconds remaining.  The Cardinals went on to fall by a score of 11-10.
The Cardinals two losses this season are against top-12 ranked opponents, Molloy and Mercyhurst.

WJU goes on the road to face off Florida Institute of Technology on Monday, March 7 at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.

"Although the loss was tough for us, we have to regroup and focus on our game Monday. We are very excited to compete against another ranked opponent in Florida Tech at Johns Hopkins, one of the most historic venues in all of college lacrosse," added DelPrince.
