Cardinals Make It Eight-Straight Wins, Take Pair from Falcons

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Picking up where it left off last week, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team stretched its win streak to eight games as it took a pair of Mountain East Conference road games at Notre Dame College, 3-1 and 7-3.

A Kelsi Thompson two-run first-inning double gave the Cardinals (18-10/6-2 MEC North) a 2-0 lead it never gave up in the opener. Victoria Scott drove in three runs, including a two RBI double in the fourth, and propelled WJU over Notre Dame College (9-20/3-9 MEC North) of game two.

"We played really well today. We made adjustments at the plate and the defense was solid," said Kelli Williams, WJU head coach. "These were two great team wins."

The WJU offense produced 23 hits and pounded out double-digit totals in each game. The team's defense also did not commit a single error.

Scott, Cassie Holstein and Dana Achille all registered four hits. Scott doubled twice, including a 3 for 3 game two with three RBI.

Holstein singled twice in both games and scored three runs. Achille also lined four singles.

Ali Smith launched her second home run of the year, a solo shot, in game two. Thompson doubled, singled, scored twice and added two RBI. Rachel Conrad and Molly Welsh singled twice and combined for three RBI.

In the circle, MEC Pitcher of the Week Mallory Chapman (9-5) won her fourth start in a row. The sophomore allowed five hits, one earned run and walked one with five strikeouts. Kori Locke (5-2) picked up her fifth win in game two relief. She gave up only four hits and fanned seven over 4.1 frames.

WJU travels to southwest Virginia for a Saturday twinbill at The University of Virginia's College at Wise. First pitch is 1 p..m.

Game 1

Leading off the game, Holstein legged out a bunt single, Scott sacrificed her to second and Thompson doubled her home. Morgan Stohlman lofted a sac fly to center three batters later for a 2-0 lead.

Chapman gave up the lone Notre Dame College run in the home second on leadoff walk, sacrifice and single. The Cardinals pitcher gave up only three hits in the last five innings.

Welsh and Holstein started the seventh with back-to-back singles. After a Scott sacrifice, Thompson added the insurance run with a sac fly for the eventual 3-1 final.

Game 2

Holstein started game two the same as the opener with a single. Thompson joined Holstein on a Falcons' error, before Conrad singled to center field to score both runners.

Notre Dame College edge ahead with a pair of scores in the third, 3-2.

The home lead did not last as WJU went back ahead in the top of the fourth. After Stohlman and Achille hits, Welsh singled one home. With two outs, Scott put the Cardinals back on top with her two-run double, 5-3.

Smith added her solo homer in the fifth and Scott another RBI sixth-inning single for the 7-3 score.
