Cardinals Cruise in Opener and Outlast Cavaliers Late for Sweep

WISE, Va. – And the two-week run continued. A Kelsi Thompson opener grand slam and two key Dana Achille late-game hits helped the Wheeling Jesuit softball team posted its five twinbill sweep in a row with 10-0 and 4-2 victories at The University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The Cardinals' two victories extended their win streak to 10 and they have now equaled their 2015-win total of 20 with a 20-10 record and an 8-2 Mountain East Conference North Division mark.

WJU put a six-run fifth inning at bat together with Thompson's grand slam and ended game one in five innings, 10-0. In the circle, Mallory Chapman fired her third shutout in two weeks with a three-hitter.

Achille was part of three of the team's four run in game two. She drove in the first tally, doubled and scored to tie the game in the seventh and knocked in the go ahead run in the 10th frame.

"UVa-Wise is a good team and (for us) to get two from them today is great. We jumped on their mistakes and made it happen," said WJU coach Kelli Williams. "On this team, we have fighters. They never give up and won't go away. That's what I love about these guys. It's also great to see our bats alive and playing as one."

As a team, WJU totaled more than 20 hits for the two games once again with 22, including double digits in each.

The three Cardinals pitchers – Chapman, Erin Unterbrink and Kori Locke – held the Cavaliers (17-18/7-7 MEC South) to nine hits over 14 innings and fanned 23 hitters.

Thompson totaled five RBI in game one with a sac fly to go with her grand slam home run. Achille doubled twice and singled once, while she drove in three and scored twice.
Cassie Holstein and Morgan Stohlman posted four hits apiece. Holstein had three of hers in game two, while Stohlman registered a 3 for 3 opener.

Ali Smith tripled and Victoria Scott doubled for the Cardinals other extra base hits.

WJU finishes its weekend with a noon doubleheader at Concord on Sunday.

Game 1

In the top of the first, Scott doubled down the left field line and scored on Rachel Conrad's single as WJU never trailed.

Chapman worked her way out of a big UVa-Wise bottom of the second threat. With runners on second and third without an out recorded, Chapman struck out two and enticed a ground out to short stop and retired the side unharmed.

Stohlman lined a RBI single and Achille a run-scoring third-inning double for a 3-0 lead.

Thompson lofted a fourth-inning sac fly, before she led the Cardinals six-run fifth inning with her grand slam.

Chapman shut the door on UVa-Wise in the home fifth. She improved to 10-5, struck out eight and walked only one in her third shutout in the last two weeks.

Game 2

After the Cavaliers edged ahead on a bottom of the sixth solo homer, the Cardinals struck right back. Achille led off the visiting seventh with a double and scored on a home throwing error.

Following 2.5 scoreless innings, WJU broke the 2-2 tie. Amanda Mangelo started on second on the international extra-inning rule and Michaela Miller was hit by the pitch. Stohlman loaded the bags on a bunt single. Achille lined a RBI hit to right field and Molly Welsh added a RBI ground out for a 4-2 lead.

Locke completed her perfect 3.2 frames of work with a pop out and two strikeouts in the UVa-Wise 10th-inning at bat. Locke improved to 6-2 as she did not allow a hit in her work and fanned seven.

Starter Erin Unterbrink struck out eight over 6.1 innings with only two earned runs and six hits.
