Smith Late Homer and Seven-Run At Bat Helps WJU Sweep Fairmont State

WHEELING, W.Va. – One week can make a real difference. Wheeling Jesuit completed a perfect 6-0 week as it received a late Ali Smith homer in the opener and produced a seven-run third inning to sweep Fairmont State, 3-2 in 8 innings and 10-5, Saturday afternoon.

After dropping two doubleheaders last week, WJU turned around its fortunes with three twinbills sweep this week.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Smith blasted a game-tying solo homer to left field, before the Cardinals (16-10/4-2 Mountain East Conference) opened the eighth with three-straight hits and scored the game-winner on a Falcons (9-13/4-4 MEC) error.

WJU broke open game two with seven runs on seven hits including the fourth Morgan Stohlman double of the day and 8-0 score. Freshman Kori Locke shut the door on the Fairmont State comeback over the final 2.2 innings.

"I thought the players played really well today. Fairmont State is a good team and the fact we can put 10 runs (on the scoreboard) against them shows that our bats are finally coming alive," said WJU coach Kelli Williams. "Our pitching and defense was also really good today. I'm proud of how everyone played today."

Stohlman lined two doubles in each of the day's games and drove in four runs to lead the 19-hit WJU offense. Molly Welsh doubled twice in game two's third frame and added a pair of singles.

Smith homered, doubled and scored four times. Marissa Cangelosi doubled and singled twice.

WJU starts a week on the road Wednesday afternoon, March 30, at Notre Dame College. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 3 p.m.

Game 1

The Falcons Courtney Iaobacci led off the game with a double and scored.

Stohlman drove in Smith, who walked, on her first two-bagger down the right field line to tie the game, 1-1, in the second inning.

Iaobacci struck again with a solo home run to start the third inning and 2-1 Fairmont State lead.

The game stayed in the Falcons favor until the seventh inning. Smith drove the ball over the left field fence, her first homer of the year, to tie the game, 2-2.

After Mallory Chapman retired the visitors in order in the top of the eighth, Welsh singled through the right side to begin the home half. Cassie Holstein and Victoria Scott, who both singled twice, reached on bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. Kelsi Thompson lined the ball right to the Fairmont State left fielder, who dropped the ball and Welsh touched home plate for the game-winner, 3-2.

Chapman (8-5) fanned nine hitters and gave up four hits over eight innings of work. She finished the week with a 0.63 ERA by allowing only Saturday's two earned runs over 22 frames of work and three victories.

Game 2

Stohlman registered her third double to drive in the late game's first run in the home second inning.

In the bottom of the third, Welsh accomplished an unusual feat. The freshman led off with a double and came around to hit a second double in the same WJU at bat. Scott and Rachel Conrad had RBI singles, while Stohlman and Cangelosi hit run-scoring doubles. Welsh finished the seven-run third with her second double to drive home the final score, 8-0.

Fairmont State pulled to within 8-5 after it plated two tallies in the fourth and three more in the fifth and chased WJU starter Erin Unterbrink.

Kori Locke took the ball and helped the Cardinals shut the door. Locke allowed only three hits over the final 2.2 innings and struck out three for her first collegiate save.

For the final pair of home team runs, Smith doubled and scored on a wild pitch, before Welsh singled home the last run in the fifth.
