Cardinals Win Final Period, Defeat Cavaliers

WHEELING, W.Va. – Dereck Downs fired home three fourth-period goals and Mike Stillings and Joe Wright scored goals nine seconds apart midway the quarter as the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team defeated Walsh, 12-10, Saturday afternoon.

After the Cavaliers (4-6) tied the game at 7-7 less than three minutes into the final period, Downs answered with back-to-back goals and the Cardinals (3-4) never trailed again. The Stillings and Wright goals pushed the margin to 11-8.

"Going into this week, we, as a coaching staff, really wanted to challenge our guys," said WJU head coach Landon DelPrince. "Each day of practice was intended to be a grind, and our players answered the call. There's no doubt in my mind that their effort this week is what led to today's victory. It was a total team win."

Downs waited until the fourth period, but registered a 'hat trick' for top WJU scoring honors.

Bryce Brochu added two goals and two assists. Stillings was the other multiple goal scorer with two. Trenton Kindall and Sam Horning had a goal and an assist apiece.

"I'm extremely proud of the way Michael Stillings and Trenton Kindall played today. Those two guys and Joe Wright in the fourth quarter is who made all the difference on offense. Defensively, we played incredibly tough down the stretch," added DelPrince.

Goalie Jake Lilly had nine saves in the WJU net.

The Cardinals put the first three scores on the board, the first coming with 8:42 remaining in the first. Michael Schonhiutt found the back of the net and WJU led, 1-0.

Brochu scored just one minute after, and the Cardinals led 2-0. McLean Fitzmartin tallied WJU's third score with 6:21 remaining.

Walsh answered the Cardinals hot start, and scored the final two goals of the first period.

Horning struck first in the second period and WJU led by two scores, 4-2. Freshman Kindall added his second score of the season with 12:29 on the clock and the Cardinals led 5-2.

Brochu added his second score of the afternoon to stretch the WJU lead to four goals, 6-2.

The Cardinals defense came up with a huge penalty kill late in the second period. Two Cardinals were called for minute penalties apiece, and WJU was down two men. The Cardinals held the Cavaliers scoreless in the man-up opportunity, and WJU would take a 6-4 upper hand in the second half.

Stillings added a goal with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter and WJU led, 7-5. Walsh would add a score, and trailed the Cardinals by a lone goal, 7-6, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers tied the contest at seven apiece early in the fourth before WJU regained the lead. Brochu assisted Downs and the Cardinals led, 8-7. Downs scored an unassisted goal shortly after, and WJU led by two scores.

Stillings found the back of the net again with 6:49 remaining to give Wheeling Jesuit a 10-8 lead. Wright joined in the scoring action and gave the Cardinals a 11-8 advantage with 6:40 on the clock. Downs scored with thirty seconds remaining, and WJU went on to win the contest, 12-10.

The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, April 2, when they travel to Ohio Valley University. Face off is set for 1 p.m.
