Cardinals Post First MEC Sweep, Chapman Records Another Shutout

URBANA, Ohio – For the second time in as many days, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team put two wins to its record. Mallory Chapman threw an opening three-hitter and the Cardinals rode an early lead to a 7-4 second game at Urbana University.

After she fired a four-hitter at Seton Hill Tuesday, Chapman bettered herself with another shutout, a three-hitter, and fanned seven Blue Knights (1-10/0-2 Mountain East Conference North). Eight WJU (14-10/2-2 MEC North) hitters recorded hits and helped the visitors to six-run lead in the victory.

"Our defense was solid today and it's nice to see our bats coming alive. We were disciplined at the plate today and it showed," said WJU coach Kelli Williams. "Today was good wins all the way around for us."

Chapman (7-5) did not allow a walk for the second performance in a row. The second-year pitcher did not allow more than one hit in an inning and only one runner past second base.

Cassie Holstein led the Cardinals' 16-hit day with three singles and two RBI.

Kelsi Thompson lined a run-scoring double as the team's lone extra-base hits. Victoria Scott, Dana Achille and Mikaela Miller, whose were her first collegiate hits, all three singled twice.

WJU returns home Friday afternoon for a noon doubleheader against Shepherd.

Game 1

With two out in the top of the third, Scott singled and ran home on Thompson's double.

The score remained 1-0 until the Cardinals' Cangelosi reached on a seventh-inning error and scored when Holstein singled.

Game 2

WJU plated two top of the first unearned runs and never trailed.

Molly Welsh drove in the first of her two RBI in the second for a 3-0 Cardinals advantage.

Welsh added an RBI single along with ones from Holstein and Scott in the visitors' sixth. Thompson lofted a sac fly to complete the four-run frame for a 7-1 lead.

Urbana pushed home a single run in the sixth, before Erin Unterbrink shut the door in relief of a good Kori Locke WJU pitching performance in the seventh for the save.
