Chapman Four-Hitter, Cardinals Bats Come Alive in Sweep of Griffins

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Cardinals bats came alive Tuesday. After struggling at the plate last week, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team plated 13 runs and Mallory Chapman fired an opening four-hitter for a 5-0 and 8-3 sweep over Seton Hill.

Chapman posted her second shutout of the season and Dana Achille homered for the Cardinals (12-10) game-winning opening effort. WJU plated a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings to complete the two victories over Seton Hill (7-13).

"We played really well today all the way around. We put the ball in play and executed. Our pitching and defense was solid too," said Cardinals head coach Kelli Williams.

Chapman (6-5)  five-hit Ohio Valley on March 13 for her other season shutout. The sophomore fanned only two Griffin hitters, but did not allow a walk for the third time.

Achille belted her third home run of the year in the game-one fifth inning.

Ali Smith led all WJU hitters with a double and three singles, while she drove in three runners. Cassie Holstein and Victoria Scott combined for six hits, three each, five runs, three RBI and a stolen base.

Kelsi Thompson drove in three runs on two singles and Molly Welsh singled twice and stole two bases.

WJU returns to action Wednesday afternoon in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Urbana.

Game 1

In the top of the third, Marissa Cangelosi reached on a Griffins error and came around to score two batters later on a Holstein ground out to first base. Chapman did not need any more runs as support.

The WJU hitters added single runs in the fifth and sixth, before they completed the runs with two more in the seventh for the 5-0 final.

Game 2

Seton Hill took its first lead with a single unearned run in the home first.

WJU answered with a three-run third behind Scott, Thompson and Smith RBI hits. The Cardinals added four more fourth-inning tallies for the win.

Freshmen Erin Unterbrink (3-2) and Kori Locke combined to allow nine hits and two earned runs over the seven frames in the circle.
