Lions Answer Cardinals Comeback Attempt for the Win

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A pair of Dereck Downs goals opened the second half, but the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team's comeback was stopped by host Lindenwood's six-straight goal answer for the Saturday afternoon victory.

Trailing 7-2 at the intermission, the Cardinals (2-4/1-2 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) surged to start the second half on Downs two goals in the opening 2:05 for a 7-4 score. The Lions (5-2/3-1 ECAC) fired home the next six goals, including two by Jon George, who had four in the match.

"There's no reason for us to hang our heads at this point in the season. We have plenty of good games left on our schedule to prove ourselves," said Landon DelPrince, WJU head coach. "It was certainly a tough loss for us today, but we'll be back better than ever next week. That's definitely what we're working towards."

Bryce Brochu led WJU with two goals and an assist, while Downs had his pair of scores.

Freshman Trenton Kindall netted his first collegiate goal. Sam Horning and Mike Stillings had one tally apiece. Luke Gilman assisted on two WJU goals.

Cardinals goalie Jake Lilly recorded 15 saves.

Kindall put WJU on the scoreboard with the match's first goal 4:51 into the opening period. Lindenwood came back and rattled off the next three goals and seven of the final eight of the first half for the 7-2 advantage.

WJU next entertains Walsh next Saturday, March 26, starting at 3 p.m.
