Golden Eagles Take Advantage of Cardinals Miscues, Sweep Games

WHEELING, W.Va. – The University of Charleston made it a tough Wheeling Jesuit softball home-opening doubleheader. The Golden Eagles took advantage of Cardinals miscues in both games for 5-1 and 6-1 Friday night victories.

Following a WJU (10-10/0-2 Mountain East Conference) error, Charleston's Kelly Browning hit a two-run homer and it never trailed in the opener. In the late game, a bases-loaded Cardinals error led to a five-run Golden Eagle top of the seventh to decide the outcome.

"The players are working hard. We just need to keep plugging away and the ball will fall for us," stressed WJU head coach Kelli Williams.

Rachel Conrad accounted for three of WJU's seven hits over the two contests. The redshirt junior powered an opening solo home run and went 3 for 7.

Freshman Taylor DiPerna went 2 for 3 with a double and a run in game two. Ali Smith also doubled in the first game.

Game 1

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Conrad connected for her third homer of the year to left field. Despite a Smith double in the same at bat, WJU still trailed 2-1.

Charleston added three insurance runs over the fifth and sixth innings, while it held WJU to only two hits in the final five innings.

Game 2

DiPerna proved to be the WJU offense. The speedy freshman legged out a double down the shallow left field line and was sacrificed home two batters later by Kelsi Thompson to tie the game, 1-1.

A Conrad single was the lone other hit for the Cardinals offense.
