WISE, Va. – A little time off may have been the best medicine for the Cardinals baseball team. Playing for the first time in a week, Wheeling Jesuit earned its first doubleheader sweep with a 3-2 eight-inning first game and broke out for a 9-3 late-game victory at The University of Virginia's College at Wise Friday afternoon.
Following a pair of
Dillon Sunnafrank solo homers, Anthony Connacher lofted a game-winning eighth-inning sac fly for the opening Cardinals (3-11/2-0 Mountain East Conference) win. WJU scored multiple runs in three at bats with four runners crossing home top of the third in the late win over the Cavaliers (9-7/0-2 MEC).
Sunnafrank belted a pair of game one homers, added a late-game two-run single and totaled four RBI. He also pitched the day's opening five innings where he allowed only two runs.
Both Connacher and
Joe San Felippo produced three hits as well. Connacher added a double and San Felippo two runs.
Chris Brake singled twice, while Pat Biega and
Jagger Bruck both drove in a pair of runners.
WJU moved its Saturday twinbill at Concord to Monday afternoon due to the incoming weekend weather.
Game 1 Leading off both the second and fourth innings, Sunnafrank blasted solo home runs and WJU lead 2-1.
The Cavaliers tied the game, 2-2, with a single run in the home fifth frame.
In the extra-frame eighth inning, San Felippo lined a leadoff single and moved to third base two batters later on a Shawn Gaydos hit. Connacher lofted a sac fly to right field as the next hitter for a 3-2 lead.
San Felippo completed three perfect innings with a ground out and finished the game by fanning the final two UVa-Wise hitters for the win in relief. He had five strikeouts without a walk.
Game 2 Tied at 1-1, WJU took advantage of a home error as well as a Bruck being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Biega following with a walk to bring in the fourth run of the frame and 5-1 lead.
The Cardinals added a pair of scores in both the sixth and seventh innings for the eventual 9-3 win.
Ben Standiford earned the win and
Logan Hudson logged a three-inning save.
