Panthers Take Two from Cardinals Softball

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican held the Wheeling Jesuit softball offense in check and took both ends of Thursday's doubleheader, 7-1 and 7-2.

The Panthers (11-11) went out to a 5-0 opener lead, before they took the first-game win over the Cardinals (10-8). WJU pushed across single scores in the first two at bats, but it could not add to it and came up short in the late contest.

"We didn't do the little things. We didn't come ready to play hard. (For us) going through the motions won't get you wins," said WJU head coach Kelli Williams.

Molly Welsh and Cassie Holstein registered three hits apiece of the team's 14 on the day. Welsh went 3 for 3 in the opener with a double, while Holstein doubled and singled in the first game.

Kelsi Thompson added a single in each contest. Marissa Cangelosi singled home a run in game two.

WJU opens its home schedule Friday evening in a 5 p.m. Mountain East Conference twinbill against the University of Charleston.

Game 1

Trailing 5-0 in the top of the fifth, Welsh singled, stole second and came around to score on Holstein's double. WJU loaded the bases with two outs after a Thompson single and a Rachel Conrad walk, but failed to score.

Ohio Dominican added to six-inning insurance runs for the eventual 7-1 final.

Game 2

The Cardinals put the first runs on the scoreboard in the second contest. With two outs, Thompson and Conrad had back-to-back singles. Thompson raced home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

After ODU tied the game in the home first, WJU edged back in front in the second. Ali Smith drew a walk, was sacrificed to second and ran home on the Cangelosi single up the middle to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals enjoyed the lead for two innings until the Panthers broke on top. With the bases loaded and two outs, ODU tied the game on a walk. Julia Suyak put the home team ahead for good as she cleared the bases with a double for a 5-2 score.
