Cardinals Softball Takes Two of Three Weekend Contests

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 SALEM, Va. – Completing its second southern trip, Wheeling Jesuit took two of three softball games capped by Mallory Chapman's five-hit shutout on Sunday morning.

The Cardinals (10-6) took a one-run victory, 4-3, over Chowan and a 3-1 close loss to Shippensburg, before Chapman led her the team to a 4-0 win over Ohio Valley.

"We have been playing well lately. We are putting things together and we finally got a shutout," said Cardinals coach Kelli Williams. "We did the little things and it showed today."

Chapman picked up both circle victories. The sophomore logged 14 innings with two earned runs, 13 hits and nine strikeouts. She fanned four in the five-hit shutout Sunday.

At the plate, Courtney Rogers drove in three runs on a pair of singles. Cassie Holstein added a pair of singles, two runs and two stolen bases.

Rachel Conrad singled three times with one RBI. Chapman lined a single in each game she pitched. Molly Welsh had two singles and two stolen bases.

vs. Chowan

WJU plated two runs in each of the home third and fourth frames for the needed runs.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Dana Achille singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a Welsh hit. Three hitters later, Rogers drove home Welsh to tie the game, 2-2.

The Cardinals took advantage of two Hawks errors for the needed runs off only a Chapman single for a 4-2 lead. Chapman gave up a fifth-inning run, but no more for the 4-3 win.

vs. Shippensburg

In the top of the third, Kelsi Thompson doubled home Molly Welsh to tie the contest, 1-1.

After two outs in the home fifth, the Raiders turned a walk into a run on a next batter on a double. Shippensburg added a second score in the at bat and held WJU scoreless in the final two innings for the 3-1 win.

vs. Ohio Valley

The Cardinals struck early and Chapman did the rest.

In the home first, Holstein started with a walk and was joined by Thompson as the first two runs off a Courtney Rogers double. Chapman laced an RBI double for a 3-0 WJU lead.

Thompson made it 4-0 Cardinals on a second-inning hit, while Chapman stymied the Fighting Scotts offense without a run.

WJU opens Mountain East Conference North Division action on Wednesday afternoon in a twinbill at Urbana. First pitch set for 3 p.m.
