Cardinals Split Against PSAC Pair

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – After a week off, the Wheeling Jesuit softball team earned a split against two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foes – a 5-2 win over Gannon and a 4-1 loss to Kutztown.

The Cardinals (8-5) pounded out 11 hits and Mallory Chapman allowed one hit and fanned eight over the Golden Knights (7-6). Kutztown's (12-7) Danielle Amato smacked a three-run first-inning home run and her team never trailed in the late-afternoon win over WJU.

"In the first game, Mallory threw well and our defense was solid. We were disciplined at the plate and we took away the win out of it," said WJU coach Kelli Williams. "We played a great hitting Kutztown team and they made our defense work. We were putting the ball in play, but right at them. Overall, we got better today and played well."

Cassie Holstein continued her early-season hitting with a 3 for 4 opener with a run and two RBI. Rachel Conrad line three hits with a run, while Victoria Scott added a 2 for 3 game one with a RBI.

Chapman, Morgan Stohlman and Molly Welsh all had run-scoring hits.

WJU continues its Virginia-weekend trip Saturday afternoon where it faces Chowan (2 p.m.) and Shippensburg (4 p.m.)
