Cardinals’ Upset Bid Falls Short Against No. 19 Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y., W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team fell short in its upset bid Saturday afternoon of No. 19 Molloy, 13-11, in the season opener.

The Cardinals' Bryce Brochu and Dereck Downs netted back-to-back goals in 1:29 to pull within a goal, 12-11. The Lions held its home field with a game-sealing score with 1:13 on the clock.

"Although today's loss was tough, we learned that there's a lot of fight in this program," said WJU head coach Landon DelPrince after his first collegiate match at the helm. "These boys worked extremely hard today, and I couldn't be more proud of their effort. There are definitely some things I need to work on as a coach that will help put these guys in a better position to be successful. The future is bright for this team."

Downs paced the visitors' attack with four goals and an assist. Brochu had a great first senior match with three goals and a pair of assists to his credit.

Sam Horning and Michael Schonhiutt added two goals apiece. Luke Gilman and McLean Fitzmartin each assisted on a goal.

After eight Molloy first-half goals were scored, WJU's Jake Lilly took over in the net. He recorded nine saves and allowed only five goals during his 28:47.

"I'm very proud of our backup goalie, Jake Lilly, and the performance he had in the second half. His effort in the cage certainly helped us get back in the game," noted DelPrince.

Schonhiutt put the Cardinals on the scoreboard first with the opening goal at 10:23 in the first period. The home Lions came back with the next three scores of the period and five in a row overall, 5-1, for a lead they would not give up.

WJU will have a week off before it plays host to Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Mercyhurst University next Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m.

"We're excited to get back to Wheeling this weekend to begin preparing for Mercyhurst," finished the WJU coach.
