WHEELING, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference's best scoring offense and defense went head-to-head Thursday night. Glenville State entered the contest averaging 91.9 points per night, while the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals allow on average 59.2 points per game. Something had to give.
The Cardinals held the Pioneers 12 points under their previous season low, and over 30 points below their season average. WJU went on to win the contest, 71-58 over Glenville State.
WJU outrebounded Glenville State impressively, 70-37. The Cardinals secured a season-high 30 offensive boards.
Jaana Motton led the Cardinals on the glass. She pulled down 18 rebounds while scoring seven points and handing out three assists.
With the win, the Cardinals (22-3, 17-2 MEC) stretch their win streak to eight games, and snap the Pioneers (17-8, 13-6 MEC) win streak at six.
"I thought it was an outstanding team win,'' head coach Debbie Buff expressed. "Glenville State is a very athletic and talented team, so to outrebound them 70-37 was a phenomenal effort. Our defense was also very good. It was just a great team effort, and everybody contributed."
Glenville State led for nearly the entire first quarter. The Cardinals only lead, 4-3, came off a pair of Chenelle Moore layups. The Pioneers led 14-11 after the first 10 minutes.
WJU scored the first six points of the second quarter to gain the upper hand. The Cardinals and Pioneers exchanged baskets throughout the quarter, before WJU scored the final six points to take a six-point lead, 35-29, into the break.
WJU held the advantage for the entirety of the third period, as they never trailed. Senior Taylor Lubinsky netted a layup with 24 seconds remaining to give WJU a five-point edge heading into the fourth.
Potentially the most important shots of the game came on back to back possessions for the Cardinals. Junior guard Kylie Frizell knocked down a pair of treys to grow the Cardinal lead to nine, 56-47.
The Cardinals first double-digit lead came off of a Jaila Bryant jumper with 4:16 remaining in the fourth. Mariah Callen converted a pair of free throws at 2:21 to regain the 11-point lead.
Callen made another free throw with 20 seconds on the clock to give the Cardinals their largest lead, 14 points, of the evening. WJU went on to win the contest by 13 points, 71-58.
Bryant paced the WJU offense with 16 points. The Pickerington, Ohio native also grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds, while handing out one assist, blocking one shot, and stealing one pass.
Callen finished with 14 points while securing nine of WJU's rebounds. She also dished out five assists on the evening. Moore was the third leading Cardinal scorer. She chipped in 12 points on 5-7 shooting and recorded six rebounds.
Kylie Frizell rounded out the double-digit scoring attack for WJU. She hit three treys and a layup to tally her 11 points while notching seven rebounds.
Lubinsky finished with six points, nine rebounds, and one assist, block, and steal. Lydia Hyburg scored three points, while Damonique Patterson chipped in two points for the Cardinals.
WJU continues its home stretch, Saturday February 20 against West Virginia Wesleyan. The contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip.
