Cardinals Rout Bobcats On Senior Day

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team took care of business on Senior Day. WJU defeated the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan, 89-54, in the Alma Grace McDonough Center.

Jaila Bryant, Taylor Lubinsky, and Rachael Smetzler, who are the three Cardinal seniors, all scored on the afternoon. The Cardinals shot 53.8 percent, including 50 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinal bench outscored the Bobcats, 53-15.

"I am very happy for the seniors – Rachael, Jaila, and Taylor. It was a great game and an overall great day for the program to get to 23 wins," head coach Debbie Buff stressed.

The Cardinals (23-3, 18-2 Mountain East Conference) won the first period, 18-14, over the Bobcats (6-18, 4-16 MEC). WJU finished the first ten minutes on a 5-0 run, consisting of a basket from Jaana Motton and a trey from Kylie Frizell.

WJU took the first three baskets of the half, and the Cardinal run stretched to 11 midway into the second quarter. WJU led by 10, 24-14, with 7:48 remaining in the half. The WJU lead grew to 13 off a pair of free throws by Lydia Hyburg.

Mariah Callen netted a three-point attempt just before the clock struck zero to send the Cardinals into the half with a 15-point advantage, 39-24.

With 4:54 on the clock in the third quarter, Motton knocked in a layup to give WJU a 20-point advantage, 51-31. The margin grew to 27, 67-40, heading into the final period of play.

Hyburg converted an old fashioned three-point-play less than a minute into the fourth quarter to give WJU a 32-point lead. WJU increased its lead, and went on to win 89-54 over West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Cardinals received scoring from all 14 players in the game. Jaana Motton led WJU with 14 points and four rebounds. Mariah Callen chipped in 13 points on 5-6 shooting including 2-2 from three-point range.

Jaila Bryant supplied the Cardinals with 12 points, three rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Lydia Hyburg was the fourth Cardinal in double-figure scoring. The junior forward finished with 11 points.

Chelsea Richardson added nine points and three rebounds off the bench. Kylie Frizell scored seven points and secured a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Chenelle Moore grabbed seven rebounds and scored six points.

Aaliyah Sadler, Marissa Tucker, and Taylor Lubinsky finished the afternoon with three points each. Rachael Smetzler, Cassi Stein, Damonique Patterson, and Kiarra Kamarec all added two points.
