WJU Storms Past Concord for 21st Win

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second consecutive game, the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team scored 71 points en route to a Mountain East Conference victory. WJU defeated the Mountain Lions of Concord University, 71-52, Saturday afternoon.

WJU outrebounded Concord 53-28, and the Cardinal bench outscored the Mountain Lion bench 34-7.

Kylie Frizell notched a season high in both points and rebounds. The junior guard netted 18 points on 7-9 shooting off the bench, as she drained four treys, while collecting nine boards. She also handed out two assists.

Mariah Callen joined Frizell with 18 points including a trio of treys. The Morgantown, West Virginia native also secured a season high in rebounds, eight.

"Concord played very hard. We missed too many easy shots in the paint, but we were able to come out with the victory," head coach Debbie Buff stated. "Kylie and Mariah were excellent today. We outrebounded Concord 53-28, and shot 9 of 11 from the line. We will have to be ready for Thursdays game against Glenville."

WJU (21-3, 16-2 MEC) doubled up Concord (5-19, 3-15 MEC), 16-8, in the first period. Jaila Bryant scored the first six Cardinal points off a pair of layups and a jumper to tie the game at six apiece. The Cardinals finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to lead by eight heading into the second quarter.

Senior captain Taylor Lubinsky notched a fast break layup 20 seconds into the fourth to open up the scoring. Frizell knocked in another three-pointer shortly after, stretching the lead to 18.

The largest WJU lead, 21 points, came off a three pointer by Lubinsky with 3:01 remaining. The Cardinals went on to win the contest, 71-52, and have now won seven consecutive games.
