No. 18 Cardinals Outlast Battlers, 88-76

Burns 3-Pter Late Highlight
WHEELING, W.Va. –
The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals outlasted the Alderson Broaddus Battlers, 88-76, for the teams fourth consecutive victory Friday evening. Four of the five WJU starters finished in double figures as the starting five combined for 80 of the teams 88 points.
 
"I thought we played well against a good team," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We are always happy to get a win, especially to improve to a 9-1 record."
 
Jaana Motton and Monica Burns each crossed the 20-point plateau for the Cardinals. Motton supplied WJU with a game-high 22 points while Burns added a balanced attack consisting of 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals.
 
The contest was tied at 14 all with 3:34 remaining in the first period before WJU (9-1) ended the period on a 10-0 run, including a pair of treys from Monica Burns. The Cardinals would take a 24-14 lead into the second quarter.
 
WJU stretched its lead to 19 points at two different times in the second quarter. Motton converted an old fashioned three-point play with 3:24 remaining in the half to put WJU ahead, 39-20. The Cardinals would lead 44-26 at the intermission.
 
Senior Kylie Frizell buried a trey with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter, putting the Cardinals back ahead by 19, 53-34. Alderson Broaddus would cut into the Cardinals lead, and would trail by only 11 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
The Battlers cut the Cardinals lead to six points midway through the fourth quarter, but WJU fought off the visitors' surge. Mariah Callen netted a three with 3:28 remaining, putting the Cardinals back ahead by 11 points. WJU would go on to defeat the Battlers, 88-76.
 
Callen added 18 points including two three-pointers while also dishing out a game best seven assists. Frizell chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and six assists.
 
Lydia Hyburg and Chelsea Richardson each added six points to the Cardinal total. Lauren Lipscomb added the last Cardinals basket.
 
WJU returns to action to host Charleston on Tuesday, January 3 at 5:30 p.m.
