Strong Second Half Improves Cardinals to 10-1

WHEELING, W.Va. – The 18th ranked Wheeling Jesuit women used a strong second half to push past the visiting Charleston Golden Eagles, 53-47, and improve to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in Mountain East Conference play. WJU trailed UC 25-14 at the half before outscoring the Golden Eagles 39-22 down the stretch, securing its fifth straight victory.

"We played a great second half," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stressed. "I questioned our veterans at halftime to step as leaders and they certainly did. We talked about energy, leadership and discipline, and we were a different team in the second half. It was a good win over a very talented Charleston team."

WJU (10-1, 5-0 MEC) jumped to an early 4-0 lead before Charleston (4-7, 3-2 MEC) would chart the next five points. The two MEC squads would exchange five points apiece in the remaining minutes of the first, and Charleston would lead 10-9.

The visiting Golden Eagles would rattle off the first eight points of the second period, taking an 18-9 advantage. Charleston would lead by as many as 13, 24-11, and would secure an 11-point upper hand at the half.

The Cardinal defense forced two Charleston turnovers within the first minute of the third period, and WJU would trail by just four points, 25-21. UC climbed back ahead by nine points, but the Cardinals cut their lead to three points off a pair of Mariah Callen free throws at the end of the quarter.

With 7:14 remaining in the contest, Chelsea Richardson added a bucket, pulling WJU to within one point. On the team's next possession, junior Monica Burns buried a trey to regain the Cardinals lead, 41-39. Callen would add a bucket followed by a pair of free throws over the next two trips down the court, helping WJU grow its lead to six, 45-39.

Charleston managed to tie the contest at 45 all with 2:53 remaining, but the Cardinals would have an answer. WJU scored eight of the final 10 points, securing the teams' fifth straight victory, 53-47 over Charleston.

Burns led WJU scorers with 16 points while assisting on four buckets. Callen added 15 points, four rebounds and an assist. Richardson netted eight points while collecting four boards and dishing out two assists. Kylie Frizell added a team best nine rebounds to go with seven points and an assist. Lydia Hyburg chipped in five points while Jaana Motton added two.

WJU travels to West Virginia State on Thursday, January 5 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
