Cardinals Use Strong Start, Overtake Battlers

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – The No. 10 ranked Cardinals showed no rust in their first time back on the court after the Christmas break Friday night. After two home buckets, Wheeling Jesuit used a strong 17-0 run and overtook Alderson Broaddus, 87-69.

The Cardinals' (9-1) Haywood Highsmith and Pat Moseh combined for 12 of the 17 points in the early outburst. After an Alderson Broaddus (2-8) free throw, WJU added eight more unanswered points for a 25-5 margin on a Highsmith dunk and were never challenged the rest of the night.

"It was a nice team win. We were able to get off to a good start. We defended well and did a good job rebounding the ball," noted WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "We had balance scoring as we had five guys in double figures, but we do need to do a better job finishing the game."

With the victory, WJU finishes its non-Mountain East Conference schedule a perfect 6-0.

The Cardinals had five double-figure scorers in the contest. Freshman Preston Boswell paced WJU with 18 points off the bench on 6 of 12 shooting.

Highsmith accounted for another double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

Moseh chipped in 14 points and nine boards, while Kyle Ritz tallied 12 points and nine caroms himself.

Dominique Tham joined Boswell with 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.

As a team, WJU outrebounded the home team, 46-38, and held its opponent to under 28-percent from the floor in the first half.

Malik Bocook downed 18 points and handed out four assists to pace Alderson Broaddus.

On three Boswell free throws, the Cardinals enjoyed their largest first-half lead of 25 points, 37-12, at the 5:44 mark. A Ritz layup in the final seconds made it a WJU 49-27 intermission score.

The Battlers pulled back to within 15 points, 59-44, with 12:07 remaining, but were unable to get any closer the rest of the latter stanza.

WJU opens its January schedule with a return to MEC action in a Tuesday night, Jan. 3, home contest against the University of Charleston. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
