WJU Shoots Past Shepherd, Improves to 4-0 in League Play

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. In Saturday's first contest of the Wheeling Jesuit vs Shepherd doubleheader, the Cardinal women shot their way past the Rams, 78-69.

"It was a great road win to improve to 7-1," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We had a great first half, and they made a couple of runs in the second half, but we were able to weather the runs. Down the stretch, we were very good from the foul line, finishing 27-31. I am proud of the exceptional start we are off to."

WJU (7-1, 4-0 Mountain East Conference) sprinted to a 10-point lead after the first quarter, as the Cardinals scored 24 points over the first 10 minutes. WJU would extend its halftime lead to 15, after taking the second quarter from the Rams (3-5, 1-3 MEC), 17-12.

Monica Burns hit four of her first five shots of the game, including two three-pointers, to lead the Cardinals with 10 points at the intermission. As a team, WJU shot 65.4 percent (17-26) from the field, including 50 percent (4-8) from three-point distance.

The Rams would claim the third quarter over the Cardinals, 20-15, and trailed by 10 points heading into the final period.

WJU stretched its lead to 12 points at the 9:02 mark before Shepherd would make its run. The Rams scored five straight, and trailed by just seven points. Jaana Motton added a pair of Cardinal free-throws, but the Rams added the next six points, and the WJU lead was down to three points, 65-62 (2:39).

With two minutes on the clock, Shepherd netted a layup and the WJU lead was two points. The Cardinals would finish strong, scoring 11 of the final 15 points, securing a 78-69 victory.

Burns led WJU with 20 points, as she finished a perfect 10 for 10 at the free throw line. Motton chipped in a double-double consisting of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Mariah Callen added 15 points and five assists while Chenelle Moore scored nine points and grabbed two rebounds. Kylie Frizell hit two treys on her way to scoring eight points and securing six rebounds. Lydia Hyburg and Chelsea Richardson scored five and three points, respectively.

The Cardinals return to action on December 14 when they travel to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown for a 2 p.m. matchup.
