Cards Down Mountain Cats, Collect Fourth-Straight Victory

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -  The No. 24 ranked Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals took care of business on the road Wednesday night. The top-ranked Mountain East Conference squad downed the hosting University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Mountain Cats, 67-56, to improve to 8-1.
 
The Cardinals (8-1, 4-0 MEC) claimed an early seven point advantage after the first quarter and grew its lead to nine points, 33-24, at the half. UPJ tied WJU in the third quarter before the Cardinals won the fourth period, 22-20, securing its fourth consecutive victory.
 
"Our entire team stepped up today," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stressed. "Mariah was outstanding and Chelsea was a great vocal leader. Lauren (Lipscomb) and Lydia (Hyburg) were great off the bench for us. I'm very happy for this team, and we're going into the break 8-1."
 
The first Cardinal possession saw WJU jump ahead 3-0, as senior Kylie Frizell buried a trey off a Monica Burns assist. UPJ would climb ahead, 5-3, before Mariah Callen rattled off the next five points for the Cardinals. The junior point guard tied the contest with a layup before knocking down a three-pointer, also assisted by Burns.
 
With 2:05 remaining in the first, the Mountain Cats pulled to within one point of the Cardinals, 16-15. WJU would finish the period strong, scoring the final six points.
 
WJU maintained a steady lead throughout the second period, and would head into the half nine points clear of UPJ.
 
Frizell began the second half in the same fashion, knocking in another three to put the Cardinals ahead by 12. Senior Chelsea Richardson netted a layup at the 7:50 mark in the third, helping WJU to its largest lead of the game, 38-24.
 
WJU led by nine points heading into the fourth and final period. UPJ cut the visitors lead to five points with 2:30 remaining in the contest, but the Cardinals finished the night on a 10-4 run, clinching their 11-point victory.
 
Callen paced the Cardinal offense with 18 points and five assists. The Morgantown, West Virginia native also swiped four steals.
 
Frizell chipped in 13 points on 4-9 shooting, including 3-4 from three-point range. She added a team-high seven boards and an assist over her 27 minutes of playing time.
 
Burns, Richardson and Lydia Hyburg supplied WJU with eight points apiece. Burns dished out four assists while Richardson secured seven rebounds. Hyburg finished 3-4 from the field in 17 minutes of action.
 
Jaana Motton added seven points and six rebounds while Lauren Lipscomb scored five points and collected three rebounds.
 
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, December 30 when they host Alderson Broaddus at 5:30 p.m.
