Cardinals Second-Half Surge Overtakes Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Down by as many as 10 points late in the opening half, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball surged over the final 24 minutes of action and overtook Shepherd University, 85-72, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action.
 
After nine ties and four lead changes in the first 9:05 second-half minutes, a Jarin Hilson 3-pointer pushed WJU (6-1/3-1 MEC) ahead 57-56 at 10:55. Leading 67-64 with 6:09, Pat Moseh led an 11-0 Cardinals run over the next 4:11 for a 78-64 lead over the Rams (3-3/2-2 MEC) with 1:58 remaining to put the contest away.
 
"We got off to a slow start in the first half, but played much better in the second half. We played great defense the entire game and did a nice job on the glass," said Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "We had great point production from Pat (Moseh), Haywood (Highsmith), and Preston (Boswell). Haywood did an outstanding job on the glass.  Drake Goddard did a great job of getting us in our offense and being a court general, while Jarin (Hilson), Dom (Tham), Preston, and Jordan (Fair) gave us quality minutes off the bench."
 
Following an eight-point first half, Moseh pumped in 14 second-stanza points in a game-high 22 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 8 of 11 free throws.
 
Highsmith notched his second-high career rebound total with 19 boards, 15 defensive, to go with 15 points and a career-high eight assists. Kyle Ritz chipped in 10 points and five caroms on the inside.
 
Boswell netted 13 points with 6 of 6 from the foul line and Hilson had seven points.
 
The Cardinals connected on 18 of 31 second-half attempts at a 58.1-percent clip. WJU held Shepherd to a 32-percent shooting for the game.
 
The Rams were led by Naim Muhammad's 21 points and Steffen Davis had 19.
 
After an early 12-5 WJU advantage, Shepherd bounced back and pushed pushed in front. 
 
Trailing 32-22 at 4:49 in the first half, the Cardinals finished with a 9-1 run to cut the margin to 33-31 at intermission.
 
WJU has 11 days off, before it travels to face Virginia Union on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
