WJU Scores Road Win over Va. Union

RICHMOND, Va. – After successfully hitting the books last week for finals, the Cardinals passed their Thursday night test. The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team scored 76-63 road victory at Virginia Union.

Following a Panthers (8-4) early second-half charge into the lead, 48-46, Jarin Hilson's fifth 3-pointer of the game pushed the No. 13 Cardinals (7-1) back ahead for good. The Hilson triple started a WJU 12-2 run over seven minutes and the visitors kept the separation until the final buzzer.

"It was a good team win. We did a great job on the glass. Haywood (Highsmith) did a great job scoring the ball, while Jarin Hilson gave us great minutes as he shot the ball well," explained WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "Dom (Tham) gave us great minutes with his rebounds and blocked shots. Preston (Boswell) did a great job scoring and making plays. We shared the ball well as Pat (Moseh), Jarin and Haywood moved the ball well."

Highsmith netted a team-high 20 points, 13 in the first half, to go with nine rebounds and five assists.

Off the bench, Hilson and Tham combined for 29 points. Hilson connected on all five of his long-range attempts for 15 points and dished out five helpers. Tham grabbed nine boards and swatted six shots.

Boswell added a third double-digit bench producer with 11 points and a pair of steals.

Kyle Ritz chipped in seven points and six rebounds.

As a team, WJU won the battle on the glass, 25-18, over Va. Union.

Ray Anderson led the Panthers with 12 points.

It was the Highsmith and Hilson first-half WJU show. Highsmith scored nine of the team's 13 points over the opening 8:14. Hilson picked up from there with four 3-pointers over the next five Cardinals buckets and opened a 27-21 lead with 6:40 in the opening 20 minutes. Virginia Union laid in a basket with two seconds for the 41-36 WJU intermission lead.

The Panthers continued in the second half as they outscored the Cardinals, 12-5, over the first 5:37. After Hilson's fifth trey with 13:59 remaining, it was the Cardinals' game.

WJU completes its pre-Christmas docket with a Sunday afternoon home contest against Gannon. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the McDonough Center.
