WJU Prevails over Tough Ashland, Thobe Honored

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the final non-conference matchup, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team prevailed in straight sets, 3-0, over a tough Ashland Tuesday night.
 
The No. 5 Cardinals (33-2) scored four of the final six first-set points and never turned back. The home team defeated the Eagles (19-9) by scores of 25-23, 25-11, 26-24.
 
Before the match, the Cardinals honored senior setter Andrea Thobe as the WJU all-time assists leader. Thobe, who was also celebrating her birthday, has handed out over 5,500 career set assists, not counting the 34 in Tuesday evening's contest.

Emma Schleucher lofted a team-high 10 kills to go with seven digs and two aces. Maddy Smyth and Sydney Obringer chipped in nine and eight kills apiece. 
 
Kayce Krucki and Breanna Kramer dug 14 and 11 attacks on defense.
 
Ashland received 12 kills from Alli Cudworth to lead its effort.
 
The Eagles led by as many as five points, 16-11, in the opening set. WJU rattled off four-straight scores and pulled to within a point, 16-15. The Cardinals gave up a point, before they continued the run with five more points and a 20-17 lead. Ashland tied the set, 21-21, but Schleucher dinked over for a final kill and 25-23 win.
 
WJU blitzed Ashland in set two. Leading 8-6, the home team put together two four-point bursts for separation and went on for the 25-11 victory.
 
Tied at 21 in the third set, the Cardinals scored the next three points and Schleucher tipped home the final point for the match win.
 
WJU completes its regular season schedule with its final Mountain East Conference road swing. The Cardinals open the weekend with a Friday night, Nov. 11, match at the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State at 7 p.m.
