Cards bounce back; Fight past preseason-favorite Fairmont State

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a matchup of the top-two preseason Mountain East Conference women's basketball teams, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals outlasted the Fairmont State Falcons, 53-48.
 
"This was a big win for our team at this point in the schedule," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stressed. "Our defense was stellar from the start, and we managed to outrebound Fairmont State, 44-26. I thought our bench did a great job, and I am very proud of how we focused down the stretch."
 
The Cardinals (6-1, 3-0 MEC) scored the first eight points of the contest, and would win the first quarter, 15-11 over Fairmont State (3-3, 1-2 MEC).
 
WJU stretched its lead to 10 points, 23-13, off a Monica Burns three pointer early in the second quarter (7:51). Fairmont cut the Cardinals lead to three points with just over a minute remaining in the half, but WJU finished the half on a 5-0 run, and would lead at the break, 30-22.
 
Mariah Callen added the first bucket of the third quarter, stretching the Cardinals lead to 10. With 6:27 on the clock, Fairmont trailed by just one point, 32-31. The Cardinals responded once again, this time with a six-point run.
 
A pair of Jaana Motton free throws in the last second of the third period sent WJU into the final period ahead by six, 42-36.
 
Monica Burns netted a layup with 5:46 on the clock in the fourth, and WJU regained its 10-point margin. Fairmont added five straight points late in the fourth, and trailed by just three with 46 seconds remaining. Kylie Frizell added the games last points, a pair of free throws, and the Cardinals would defeat the Falcons, 53-48.
 
Burns guided WJU with 19 points and two assists. Chenelle Moore chipped in nine points and grabbed nine rebounds. Motton added eight points and a game-high 10 boards. Frizell scored six points while Callen and Richardson each had four. Taliah Cashwell hit one trey and grabbed a rebound for the Cardinals in her seven mintues of play.
 
WJU returns to the court on Saturday, December 3. The Cardinals travel to Shepherdstown, West Virginia to face the Shepherd Rams at 2 p.m.
