No. 11 Falcons Outlast Cards, 95-92 OT

WHEELING, W.Va. – The NCAA Division II men's basketball heavyweight matchup took an extra five minutes to decide a winner. In the end, No. 11 Fairmont State scored five of the final six overtime points and outlasted host No. 4 Wheeling Jesuit, 95-92, Wednesday night.

After a Dominique Tham inside layup at 1:19 in the extra period, the Cardinals (5-1/2-1 Mountain East Conference) retook a 91-90 advantage. It would be the final WJU lead of the top-notch contest. The Falcons' (6-0/2-0 MEC) Jason Jolly drained a top-of-the-key 3-pointer with 58 seconds left and made both foul shot at 12 ticks to make it 95-92. A last-second WJU trey hit off the back of the iron and ended the night.

"I am very happy with our effort tonight as our men played hard for 45 minutes," said Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "We have to get better with our execution and we have to take care of the ball better as we had too many unforced turnovers."

Forward Haywood Highsmith came off the bench and posted a team-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Pat Moseh added 17 points, six assists and five caroms. Kyle Ritz chipped in 12 rebounds and eight tallies on the inside. In his first start, Tham dumped in 13 points, grabbed eight boards and swatted four shots.

Guards Preston Boswell and Jarin Hilson contributed 14 and 13 points.

Fairmont State's Matt Bingaya netted 24 of his game-best 28 points in the game-deciding second half to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

WJU enjoyed a lead for most of the opening 20 minutes of play. Off a Tham layup, the Cards posted their biggest advantage of 12 points, 28-16, at 8:55. With eight seconds on the clock, a Jolly triple tied the game, 40-40, into the intermission.

The Falcons built the game's largest margin, 14 points, 75-61, with only 4:51 left in the contest. WJU stormed back until Hilson made a running jumper in the paint at 18 seconds for the game-tying bucket, 84-84, and forced overtime.

WJU scored the first two overtime baskets, before Fairmont State rebounded for a 90-89 lead at 1:45.

The Cardinals travel to the West Virginia eastern panhandle for a 4 p.m. Saturday contest at the Rams of Shepherd University.
