Cardinals Contain Falcons, Improve to 5-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio –  In a tightly contested Mountain East Conference matchup, the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals prevailed over the host Notre Dame Falcons, 71-61. With the victory, the Cardinals continue their best start, 5-0, under sixth-year head coach Debbie Buff.

"It is an awesome start to our season. Our veterans truly played like veterans today," Buff stressed. "Mariah played 40 minutes and led us in scoring while not committing a turnover. Chelsea was huge for us off the bench. Jaana and Chenelle did a great job in the interior for us. It was another great team victory."

The two MEC squads were not separated by more than a field goal until the last minute of the first quarter, when WJU (5-0, 2-0 MEC) went ahead, 17-13, off of a Chelsea Richardson layup.

The Falcons (1-3, 1-1 MEC) scored the first four points of the second quarter, knotting the score at 17 all. Richardson added a pair of jumpers, putting the Cardinals back in the lead, 21-17. The senior guard found fellow captain Mariah Callen open for a three-point attempt, and WJU led by five, 24-19, early in the second period.

At two different points in the second quarter, (4:03 and 3:04) Jaana Motton netted a bucket to help the Cardinals to a seven-point lead. Lauren Lipscomb stretched the WJU lead to eight (35-27) with 1:23 on the clock before a pair of Richardson free throws later had the Cardinals ahead by nine, 37-28.

Notre Dame College converted a layup before the intermission, and would trail WJU, 37-30, at the midway point.

Callen wasted no time in the second half, as she found Motton for a layup on the Cards first possession, stretching the visitors lead back to nine. Callen then drilled a jumper, assisted by Chenelle Moore (8:01), and WJU led by 11 points.

Monica Burns found Kylie Frizell with 5:43 on the clock, as Frizell buried her first trey of the game, helping WJU to a 12-point lead. The Cardinals took a 48-35 lead off a Richardson layup, but the Falcons would rush to score the final seven points of the quarter, minimizing the Cardinal lead (48-42) heading into the fourth period of play.

Moore added her fourth field goal of the evening with 7:34 remaining in the contest, putting the Cardinals ahead 55-48. The Falcons struck for a three on their next possession, but WJU answered with the next 10 points.

Callen knocked down her second trey of the game before Motton added a layup. On the next possession, Callen found Frizell open for a mid-range jumper, and WJU would occupy an 11-point advantage, 62-51. A lone Callen free throw and another Moore layup capped the Cardinals run (10-0) and slid WJU ahead by the largest margin of the game, 14 points (65-51).

WJU would fight off the Falcons late surge, improving to 2-0 in MEC play.

Callen led the Cardinals with 19 points on 6-10 shooting. The junior point guard also dished out a team-best six assists and collected two steals.

Richardson finished with 15 points, three boards and three assists in 30 minutes of action. Motton added a near double-double, 12 points and eight rebounds, while Moore supplied the Cardinals with 11 points and four rebounds.

Frizell scored seven points, including a three-point attempt, while collecting five boards. Burns handed out an assist and scored five points on the evening. Lipscomb made her lone shot of the game, finishing with two points and one assist.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, November 27 when they travel to Walsh University for a 2 o'clock start time.
