Cards Top Blue Knights, Clinch 4-0 Start

URBANA, Ohio – In its 2016-17 Mountain East Conference opener, the Cardinals women's basketball team solidified a 4-0 start to the season by topping the Urbana Blue Knights, 91-70.

Urbana held a one-point lead after the first quarter before WJU claimed a five-point margin at the half. The Cardinals would strike for the first 11 points of the third quarter, stretching their lead to 16 points, 48-32. The Blue Knights would rally back, trailing only by four points, 57-53, heading into the final period of play.

WJU used its longest run of the game, 14-0, to begin the fourth quarter and help put the game out of reach. WJU led 71-53 with 6:22 remaining and would coast to a 21-point victory over Urbana.

"We got off to a slow start and missed a lot of shots in the paint," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "We began to play with more energy in the second half, and played an outstanding fourth quarter to score 34 points. Mariah (Callen) and Chelsea (Richardson) really stepped up as leaders in the second half for us. We're proud to be 4-0."

Junior point guard Mariah Callen steered the Cardinals offense down the stretch, scoring 20 points in the final 20 minutes of play. The Morgantown, West Virginia native finished with 23 points on 7-14 shooting, including 5-8 from three-point range, while handing out five assists and charting three steals. Callen netted a pair of treys in WJU's 14-0 run, helping the Cardinals separate from the Blue Knights.

Jaana Motton chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds in her 29 minutes of action while Chenelle Moore grabbed six boards and scored 14 points.

Monica Burns finished four of six from the field for her 11 points, her fourth double-digit scoring game of the season. Burns also dished out two assists and collected five rebounds.

Seniors Kylie Frizell and Lydia Hyburg finished with seven points each. Frizell supplied WJU with a season-high six assists while Hyburg collected two rebounds.

Chelsea Richardson and Lauren Lipscomb scored four points each and Aislynn Hartman added a bucket of her own. Richardson also secured five rebounds for WJU.

The Cardinals return to action on Monday, November 21 when they travel to Notre Dame College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
