Cardinals Net Final 14 Points of Match, Claim 4th-Straight MEC Title

WHEELING, W.Va. – A team cannot finish out a championship any stronger than the Cardinals did Saturday night. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team netted the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship match's final 14 points to complete the 3-0 straight-set win over Fairmont State and claimed its fourth-straight league tournament title.

Leading 11-10, the No. 5-ranked Cardinals (38-2) scored the next four points and forced a Falcons (21-13) timeout. WJU answered the brief pause and continued its run with 10 more points capped by a Haley Kindall final-point winner for the 25-10 final. The home club took the opening two sets from Fairmont State by scores of 25-19 and 25-20.

"I am so happy for the team and this win. Fairmont State is playing at a very high level right now and it was a great match," proclaimed WJU head coach Christy Benner.

Benner and her Cardinals will enjoy Sunday, before they learn of their NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional fate. The NCAA DII National Championship Selection Show is set for Monday night at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals entered the weekend as the top-rated and lone undefeated regional team and now possess a 35-0 mark against regional foes.

MEC Freshman of the Year Breanna Kramer showed why she received the honor in the title tilt. Kramer killed a match-high 15 balls, hit .520, dug nine attacks and totaled four blocks.

Kindall had her own top night with 11 kills, a .476 attack percentage and five blocks. Andrea Thobe set the two Cardinals frontline players up with 42 assists to go with two kills, three digs, three blocks and an ace.

Kramer, Kindall and Thobe were all selected to the MEC All-Tournament Team.

Fairmont State's Mackenzie Harrison downed 15 kills of her own at a .406 clip with 10 digs in her effort. Harrison and setter Jessica Furda also garnered All-Tournament Team status.
