Cardinals Advance Past Bears to Region Semifinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the final Atlantic Regional Quarterfinal match, top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit advanced past Shaw University, 3-0, Friday night.

The Cardinals (39-2) claimed the win over the Bears (22-8) by 25-9, 25-11, 25-10 scores.

"I thought we played well together tonight and it was an overall good match for us," said WJU coach Christy Benner. "We always try to limit areas of the other team. We also played a little sloppy at times."

Mountain East Conference Libero of the Year Kayce Krucki switched to outside hitter and registered a match-high 10 kills without an error in 18 swings to lead WJU.  Breanna Kramer and Sam Obringer added 12 digs apiece.

"Our goal is to be on point and be the best we can and stay focused," added Obringer.

The Cardinals had four players finish with five kills apiece, including Emma Schleucher

"After seeing all the close early games today, it put in our mind set that we had to play our best we could tonight," added Schleucher.

Shaw recorded a program-best 22 wins and won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship. Kelly Murphy paced the Bears with six kills and six digs.

WJU moves on to Saturday night's Atlantic Region Semifinals. The Cardinals will face the Lady Cats of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, which defeated California (Pa.) 3-1 in the day's third match, in a 7:30 p.m. match. In the first Saturday Semifinal, it will be a battle of northwest Pennsylvania when Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion Gannon plays Edinboro at 5 p.m. Both Gannon and Edinboro won 3-2 decisions over Fairmont State and Shippensburg.

"We face them earlier this season here and we went five sets," explained Benner. "UPJ is a well-coached team and we expect a good fast-paced, high-energy game."
