Cardinals Second Half Push Overtakes Blue Knights, Takes MEC Opener

URBANA, Ohio – The Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team produced a final nine-minute push and overtook the Blue Knights, 97-87, in both teams Mountain East Conference Opener.

Tied at 66, the Cardinals put the next six points on the scoreboard and never looked back. WJU increased its new found advantage 12 points, 83-71, out of the final media timeout when Kyle Ritz drained his third triple of the day and Preston Boswell added a running jumper seconds later.

"I am happy we were able to get the win as Urbana came out ready to play," pointed out Danny Sancomb, WJU head coach. "I thought we did a nice job defending in the second half. Pat (Moseh) and Kyle (Ritz) played tough tonight and Haywood came alive in the second half. Preston (Boswell) and Dom (Tham) gave us nice minutes off the bench."

Ritz and Moseh pumped in 22 points apiece to lead the WJU charge. Ritz connected on 8 of 12 from the floor with 3 of 4 from long-range finding the bottom of the net to go with six rebounds. Moseh made 11 of 14 free throws for half his point total, while he grabbed seven boards and dished three assists.

After accounting for only one point and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes, Highsmith powered up 13 second-half tallies and added four more rebounds for another 14-point and 10-rebound double-double.

Boswell made all eight of his charity stripe attempts and finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Both Tham and Jarin Hilson chipped in eight bench points. Tham pulled down four caroms and Hilson five helpers.

As a team, WJU made 18 of 32 second-half tries at a 56.3-percent clip. The Cardinals also held the Blue Knights to under 37-perceont in the deciding-half.

The Blue Knights put five players in double figures led by Charles Sweatt-Washington's 17 points.

Urbana led the opening half by as many as seven points, 34-27, before WJU cut the difference to a point, 41-40, by intermission.

A Highsmith dunk at 18:41 gave the Cardinals their first lead of the day, 42-41. The two teams went back-and-forth with the lead until Tham made both free throws to break the 66-66 tie at 9:17.

WJU travels to South Euclid, Ohio on Monday, Nov. 21, where it faces Notre Dame College in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
