Cardinals March On Over Hilltoppers, Earn MEC Title Spot

WHEELING, W.Va. – And the Cardinals marched on. Lauran Graves patrolled the middle and the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team shut out rival West Liberty in the Mountain East Conference Tournament semifinal, 3-0, Friday night.

The No. 5 Cardinals (37-2) rode a 12-0 third set run and sealed the straight-sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-15) victory over the Hilltoppers (23-14).

With the win, WJU meets Fairmont State, which prevailed over Charleston (3-0) in the night's opening match, for the fourth year in the row in the MEC Tournament Championship. The Cardinals have won each of the first three MEC title meetings – 2015 by a 3-1 score, while both 2014 and 2013 were 3-0 finals.

The MEC Tournament Championship is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Graves pounded 11 kills, hit .500 and recorded seven total blocks as she led the WJU charge. Fellow sophomore Sydney Obringer sliced 10 kills.

Emma Schleucher added eight winners, eight digs, three block assists, two assists and an ace. Andrea Thobe handed out 43 assists and dug nine attacks.

Breanna Kramer chipped in 16 digs and seven kills, while Kayce Krucki produced 21 digs. Haley Kindall had seven kills and a block.

Sydney Scherer led West Liberty with five kills and two solo blocks.

Tied at 8-8 in the third set, WJU rattled off eight-straight kills with Graves and Obringer accounting for four and three in the spurt. The home squad added back-to-back blocks with an assist with Thobe and then Graves had a solo block of her own. Obringer finished the 12-0 match-sealing run with a pair of kills to make it 20-8. West Liberty pulled no closer than 23-14 before the 25-15 match-ending score.

WJU built an 18-8 first set lead and a 25-11 win. The Hilltoppers battled hard in the second set and trailed only 18-17 and 21-20 late. The Cardinals, though, posted the final four second set points capped on a Graves kill.
