Cardinals Hit Past Cavaliers, Receive MEC Regular Season Title

WHEELING, W.Va. – The first step of the postseason title quest has begun. After receiving the Regular Season title before the match, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team hit past The University of Virginia's College at Wise, 3-0, in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Quarterfinals Friday night.
 
The No. 5-ranked and top-seeded Cardinals (36-2) downed the ball at a .461 clip with only eight errors in 76 attacks in a 25-12, 25-11, 25-15 victory over the eighth-seed Cavaliers (10-24).

The WJU match set up a third meeting of area rivals. Fifth-seed West Liberty outlasted No. 4 Urbana, 3-2, in the day's longest match. The WJU-West Liberty match will be a 7:30 p.m. start as it follows the first semifinal of No. 2 University of Charleston against No. 3 Fairmont State at 5 p.m. Charleston defeated Concord and Fairmont State took care of Notre Dame College, both by 3-0 finals.
 
Leading the Cardinals' Friday charge, All-MEC Second Team Lauran Graves pounded 12 kills with one error in 16 attempts at a .688 rate and three block assists. MEC Freshman of the Year Breanna Kramer equaled her teammate with 12 kills and added nine digs.
 
MEC Player of the Year Haley Kindall hit seven kills without a miscue in eight swings, while Libero of the Year Kayce Krucki kept 14 UVa-Wise attacks in play.
 
Karley Allen produced her own dozen winners for the Cavaliers.
 
In each set, WJU opened early leads of 12-4, 11-4 and 10-3 in consecutive sets before going on for the set wins.
 
NOTE: Cardinals dropped one of their only two sets in MEC action to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty in their home opener on Sept. 13. Final match set scores of 25-10, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19 … WJU earned the 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-16, 25-14) at West Liberty on Oct. 12.
